Access to water in Africa

A data visualization experiment to tell a story behind a dataset of access to water and how that affects people in African countries.

A short project, completed in 2 days at CIID together with Ine-Charlotte Asakskogen, supervised by Annelie Berner (CIID), and Matt Nish-Lapidus (IxDA).

My role: d3.js programming, storytelling.

Data visualization is a powerful tool that allows designers to tell stories that otherwise may not be heard. Various connections and correlations may inform and surprise, helping one to create a better picture of what is happening in the world around us.

During the research, our team has explored various datasets from The World Bank, and has discovered interesting trends in regards to water resources and their influence on health and education of women and girls in Africa since 1990.

Our aim was to communicate the positive changes happening in the world using form, color, animation and text. D3 JavaScript library allowed us to achieve a desired level of interactivity with the reader/user of the information, in order for the visualization to be immersive and memorable.
